Honolulu City Council member and Congressional candidate Tulsi Gabbard yesterday received the “Outstanding Young Person” Award from the Hawai`i Jaycees. For over 30 years, the Hawai`i Jaycees have honored individuals ages 18-40 who have gone to extraordinary means to better themselves and their community.
The award recognizes exceptional achievements or contributions in a nominee’s chosen field, organizations, community, state, or nation.
“Tulsi’s lifelong commitment to community service and her determination to help move Hawai`i forward have made her among the first wave in a new generation of leadership,” said Yvette Lee, President of the Hawai`i Jaycees.
“We’re proud to recognize Tulsi's efforts.”
This year’s “Outstanding Young Person” winners were selected by a panel of three independent judges.
Hawai`i’s three recipients will be submitted to the U.S. Jaycee organization for consideration for their 10 Outstanding Young Persons of the Year.
Previous national winners have included Bill Clinton and Al Gore. Last year’s winners from Hawai`i included professional baseball player Shane Victorino, Tofi Mika Jr. and Galileo Tan II.
“I am deeply honored to accept this award because I share with the Jaycee's the commitment to serve the people of Hawai`i,” Gabbard said.

As a member of the Hawai`i National Guard, Tulsi Gabbard served two tours of duty in the Middle East. She was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for her service and was recently commissioned as a Captain.
A Democrat, Tulsi was the youngest woman in America ever elected to a state legislature when in 2002 at the age of 21 she won a Hawai`i State House seat. Two years later, Tulsi sacrificed her position in the legislature to voluntarily join her fellow soldiers being deployed to a war zone in Iraq. Between her two deployments to the Middle East, Tulsi served as an aide to Senator Daniel Akaka in the U.S. Senate. In 2010, she was elected to the Honolulu City Council where she chairs the Safety, Economic Development, and Government Affairs committee. Gabbard is a candidate for Hawai`i's second congressional district encompassing rural Oahu and the Neighbor Islands. Learn more about Tulsi at www.votetulsi.com.
